Do you accept the CDCP?
Yes. We're a participating provider, and we bill the plan directly — so you're not paying the full cost up front and waiting to be reimbursed, and you're not chasing paperwork. Depending on your income you may still have a co-payment, and we'll tell you exactly what you owe before we start anything.
You don't need to be an existing patient. New patients are welcome, and you're welcome to ring and ask questions before you decide to book.
Do you qualify?
There are four requirements, and you need all four:
- No access to private dental insurance. This is stricter than most people expect — see below.
- You've filed last year's tax return in Canada, and so has your spouse or common-law partner if you have one.
- Your adjusted family net income is under $90,000.
- You're a Canadian resident for tax purposes — again, your partner too.
The insurance rule is the one that catches people out. You're excluded if you have dental coverage through work, a pension, a family member's plan, or a professional or student organization — even if you've never used it, chose not to enrol, pay a premium for it, or it doesn't cover the full cost. Health spending accounts that cover dental count too.
Two things that surprise people the other way: coverage through a provincial, territorial or federal social program does not disqualify you — the plans coordinate so there's no duplication. And if you retired and opted out of pension dental coverage before 11 December 2023 and can't opt back in, you may still be eligible.
The quickest way to check
You don't need to guess. Look at your most recent tax slip:
- If you work — box 45 on your T4
- If you're on a pension — box 015 on your T4A
A 1 means you have no access to dental coverage through that work or pension. A 2, 3, 4 or 5 means you do, and you won't be eligible. Check your partner's slips as well — you or your dependants may have access through their plan without realising it.
How to apply
Apply directly with the Government of Canada at canada.ca/dental. It takes about ten minutes, and you'll need your Social Insurance Number and last year's tax return. You'll need to confirm every year that you still have no access to private dental coverage.
We can't apply on your behalf, but if you're not sure whether you qualify, call or text (519) 474-0220 and we'll talk it through with you.
What the plan pays
How much the CDCP covers depends on your adjusted family net income:
- Under $70,000 — the plan covers 100% of its established fees. You pay no co-payment.
- $70,000 to $79,999 — the plan covers 60%. You pay 40%.
- $80,000 to $89,999 — the plan covers 40%. You pay 60%.
Two things worth knowing before you book anywhere, not just with us. The plan's established fees aren't always the same as a provider's usual fees, and where they differ the difference is payable directly to the provider. And services the plan doesn't cover are payable directly too. Always ask a practice what you'll owe before treatment starts — we put it in writing.
What's covered
The CDCP helps pay for a wide range of oral health care when your provider recommends it: diagnostic and preventive services, basic services, major services, anaesthesia or sedation services, and orthodontic services. Many are covered without preauthorisation.
Some treatments — including anything beyond the plan's frequency limits — need the plan's approval before you have them. Your provider proposes the treatment, the CDCP decides whether it's covered, and that decision takes your oral health history and medical conditions into account. Not every request is approved. If something isn't covered, you can still choose to go ahead and pay for it directly.
Booking as a CDCP patient
Tell us you're on the plan when you book and bring your member number. We'll confirm your coverage, explain any co-payment, and give you costs in writing before treatment begins. Book online through our appointment request form, or call or text (519) 474-0220.
Common questions
Does Smilo Family Dental accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
Yes. Smilo Family Dental is a participating CDCP provider in London, Ontario, and we bill the plan directly, so you won't pay the full cost up front or chase reimbursement yourself.
How much does the CDCP pay?
It depends on your adjusted family net income. Under $70,000 the plan covers 100% of its established fees. Between $70,000 and $79,999 it covers 60% and you pay 40%. Between $80,000 and $89,999 it covers 40% and you pay 60%.
Can I still owe money if I am covered by the CDCP?
Possibly. You may have a co-payment based on your income, and the plan's established fees are not always the same as a provider's usual fees — where they differ, the difference is payable to the provider. Services the plan doesn't cover are also payable directly. We give you every cost in writing before you agree to treatment.
Does having a workplace dental plan stop me qualifying for the CDCP?
Yes. Access to dental coverage through work, a pension, a family member's plan, or a professional or student organization makes you ineligible — even if you have never used it, chose not to enrol, pay a premium for it, or it does not cover the full cost. Coverage through a provincial, territorial or federal social program does not disqualify you.
